FOREWORD
P erhaps a word of explanation in connection
with our present show will not be amiss.
On a recent trip of that eminent authority,
Dr. Bredius, to this country, for the purpose of
studying the iHJaattra," during one of his
visits to our gallery, we took occasion to show
him our four portraits of Antonio Moro. He
seemed greatly surprised and impressed to find
four fine examples of this rare Master in a private
gallery, and made the remark: “Why, with four
paintings like those, you should give a special
exhibition of the work of Antonio Moro!” Acting
on his suggestion, we have hung up the present
exhibition of four Moros. We have added to these
a few fine examples of other Schools but of the
same period.
To those who are interested, we shall be only too
glad to furnish the history, pedigrees and well-
known experts’ endorsement of any of the pictures
in this exhibition. We make no mention of these in
the catalogue, as we believe, first and foremost
the quality of a picture should speak for itself.
